AFP and other news agencies reported on the 22nd (local time) that the cumulative death toll from Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) and Uganda has surpassed 1,000, just over two months after the outbreak began.
While Uganda, which has recorded a total of 20 confirmed cases and 2 deaths, discharged its last recovered patient on the 16th and could declare an end to the epidemic by the end of next month if no additional cases arise, DR Congo is struggling to contain the spread as confirmed cases and deaths surge daily.
According to the government of DR Congo, the cumulative number of confirmed Ebola cases in the country stood at 2,473 as of the 20th.
An additional 129 cases were confirmed in just two days since the 18th.
Among them, 999 people have died, bringing the fatality rate to 40.4%—marking the first time the Ebola fatality rate within DR Congo has surpassed 40% in the current outbreak.
The fatality rate of the currently circulating Bundibugyo strain of Ebola is known to be between 30% and 50%.
