The Korea Football Association (KFA) has transitioned into an acting president system led by Vice President Lee Yong-soo following approval from the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee.
A KFA official stated, "We received approval from the Sports Council on the 20th regarding Vice President Lee Yong-soo serving as acting president."
Following the resignation of President Chung Mong-gyu on the 6th, which left the KFA presidency vacant, the association requested approval from the Sports Council for Executive Vice President Lee Yong-soo to take over as acting president, receiving the green light two weeks later.
With the transition to Vice President Lee's acting system, the KFA is now able to initiate procedures for a new presidential election.
According to the KFA's current articles of association, when the presidency is vacant, one of the vice presidents takes over the duties upon approval by the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee. If remaining term exceeds one year, a new president must be elected within 60 days.
However, the schedule is expected to be somewhat delayed. The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, as the superior body, is preparing an amendment to extend the 60-day deadline for by-elections in the event of a presidential vacancy, and the government-launched K-Football Innovation Committee has also begun working on improvements related to the KFA presidential election system.
In particular, the KFA notes that legal interpretation is required because an acting president is restricted from making major decisions such as amending the articles of association.
