The government stated today (July 22) regarding the re-search operations to find unrecovered remains and belongings of the victims from the December 29 Jeju Air passenger plane disaster, "We plan to wrap it up precisely, transparently, and as promptly as possible."
The Prime Minister's Office distributed an explanatory statement, saying, "Moving forward, the government will continue to communicate frequently with the bereaved families and mobilize all available resources and personnel under a pan-governmental cooperative system."
It added, "Currently, we are adjusting the search scope while conducting precise searches, prioritizing areas with a high probability of discovering additional remains. However, due to the nature of the search, which involves excavating soil over a wide outdoor area and sifting through it individually, some schedule disruptions due to weather conditions such as the monsoon season and heatwaves are inevitable."
Regarding the inspection results of the botched recovery of remains announced last April, the Prime Minister's Office explained, "We previously requested strict measures and follow-up preventive actions against 12 public officials whose inappropriate handling of duties was confirmed at the time. Currently, investigation and disciplinary procedures are underway by each respective agency."
Since the re-search began on April 13 through July 21, a total of 1,582 suspected human remains have been recovered.
