Yes, this occurred on a flight departing from Incheon Airport for Boracay this past Monday.
Shortly after the T'way Air flight carrying 172 passengers took off, a portable charger held by a passenger suddenly began to emit smoke and sparks.
As startled passengers shouted, "Fire!", the cabin crew immediately began to extinguish the flames using water and fire extinguishers.
After bringing the fire under control in about five minutes, they wore gloves to place the portable charger into a bucket of water to prevent further overheating.
As smoke spread through the cabin, the crew calmly instructed passengers to cover their noses and mouths with wet tissues. One passenger who was present described the situation, saying, "The portable charger was glowing bright red as if the metal had been heated up."
Fortunately, thanks to the swift response of the cabin crew, the aircraft arrived at its destination as scheduled.
The airline stated that the crew suppressed the situation early in accordance with safety manuals, and that no abnormalities were found during the subsequent aircraft inspection.
