A police officer known as the real-life model for the character Ma Seok-do, the protagonist of the film series 'The Roundup' (known in Korea as 'Crime City'), has been sentenced to a fine for drunk driving in his first trial.
On July 21, Judge Lee Seong-yeol of the Seoul Central District Court's 25th Criminal Division handed down a fine of 6 million won to Lieutenant Yoon, who was charged with violating the Road Traffic Act by driving under the influence.
The court stated that while it found Lieutenant Yoon guilty, it took into account factors such as his admission of the crime and his lack of prior criminal record when determining the sentence.
Lieutenant Yoon, who was working at the Seoul Suseo Police Station, was indicted without detention in April for causing a traffic accident while driving after drinking near Gangnam Severance Hospital on November 24 of last year.
At the time, his blood alcohol concentration was at a level warranting license revocation (0.08 percent or higher), and investigations showed there were no human casualties.
Lieutenant Yoon has since been relieved of his duties.
Previously, the prosecution had requested a prison sentence of one year and six months during the final hearing.
Lieutenant Yoon, who joined the police force in 1997 and has primarily worked in violent crime investigations, is known to have served as a motif for the character Ma Seok-do in 'The Roundup'.
Ma Dong-seok, who starred in and produced 'The Roundup', conceived the film after interviewing detectives about their experiences.
