A taxi driver who previously fell victim to a voice phishing scam involving over 100 million won has helped catch a voice phishing courier with his sharp intuition.
According to the Gimje Police Station in North Jeolla Province on Tuesday (July 21), taxi driver A picked up a passenger, B (in his 60s), who asked to be taken to a credit union in Buan, about 20 kilometers away from Gimje, around 7:00 p.m. on July 10.
Noticing that B was carrying a thick bag and appeared anxious as if he were pressed for time, A told him that there were credit unions in Gimje as well and dropped him off in front of one in the city.
Even after the passenger got out, A did not leave immediately. He remained parked and carefully observed B's behavior. Upon seeing him attempting to deposit a large amount of cash into an ATM, A immediately reported it to the police.
This was because the behavior was similar to that of the voice phishing courier he encountered three years ago when he suffered a loss of 130 million won.
Police dispatched after receiving A's report confirmed that B was attempting to deliver 20 million won to a voice phishing organization and arrested him.
The police confirmed that B had delivered a total of 775 million won to the organization on seven occasions, and they are currently investigating him on charges of violating the Special Act on Prevention of and Compensation for Damage from Telecommunications Financial Fraud.
The police presented A with a certificate of appreciation and a reward for his contribution to the arrest of the criminal and the prevention of further financial damage.
A police official stated, "The taxi driver's calm judgment played a decisive role in catching the criminal," and advised, "Please report to the police immediately if you witness any suspicious behavior."
