A fire that broke out at the Coupang logistics center in Incheon on the 18th has been extinguished after approximately 61 hours.
The Incheon Fire Department announced that the blaze, which began at the Coupang 32 Logistics Center in Seohae-gu, Seoknam-dong, around 6:54 a.m. on the 18th, was brought under control at 8:00 p.m. today.
The fire occurred at a large-scale logistics center with 8 floors above ground and a total floor area of 299,000 square meters. Firefighting efforts were hindered by the large amount of combustible materials stored inside and the complex structure of the building.
Following the outbreak, 121 people, including logistics center staff, evacuated on their own, and no casualties have been reported so far.
However, due to the risk of building collapse, Seohae-gu issued an evacuation order for nearby residents, and approximately 200 people are currently staying in temporary shelters.
Immediately after the fire started, the fire authorities issued response levels 1 and 2, and subsequently issued a national firefighting mobilization order, deploying personnel and equipment from 8 neighboring cities and provinces to engage in an all-out response.
As the firefighting operation was prolonged, collapse alarms were installed at three key points of the building to prepare for potential emergencies.
Today, the fire authorities deployed 231 pieces of equipment and 812 personnel, including firefighters, to conduct overnight firefighting operations for three consecutive days to bring the flames under control.
The fire authorities are currently maintaining the response level while working to extinguish remaining embers.
A fire official stated, "Once the fire is completely extinguished, a joint investigation team consisting of the National Fire Agency, the National Fire Research Institute, and the Korea Electrical Safety Corporation will be formed to investigate the cause of the fire and the specific scale of the damage."
