The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) has launched an initiative to inspect safety management systems for logistics facilities and improve regulations to prevent the recurrence of incidents, following the fire at the Coupang logistics center in Incheon.
MOLIT announced that it held an inaugural meeting for the "Logistics Facility Fire Safety System Improvement Task Force" today (July 20). The meeting was presided over by the Director General for Transport and Logistics and included representatives from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the National Fire Agency, the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology, as well as private experts in architecture, firefighting, and disaster prevention, and members of the logistics industry.
The task force plans to analyze the causes of fires at logistics facilities and conduct a thorough review of current fire safety management systems, covering everything from the design phase to operation and management.
It will also gather feedback from the field to develop fundamental improvement measures.
Key discussion topics include the adequacy of current regulations and systems related to fire safety in logistics facilities, improvement plans for architectural structures and fire safety standards that reflect the characteristics of these facilities, strategies to strengthen fire safety management and oversight, and plans for the installation and operation of firefighting equipment that account for fire response and evacuation needs.
The task force will be led by the Director General for Logistics Policy at MOLIT and will operate through three subcommittees: Operation and Management, Architecture, and Firefighting and Disaster Prevention.
Park Jae-soon, Deputy Minister for Transport and Logistics at MOLIT, stated, "As logistics facilities have recently become larger and taller, and are storing and processing a wider variety of goods, the risk of fire is increasing." He added, "We will do our utmost to develop effective safety management measures that the public can trust by fully incorporating feedback from the field."
