The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced that it will provide an additional 1.6 billion won in special disaster relief grants to three cities and provinces—Gyeonggi, Gangwon, and North Gyeongsang (Gyeongbuk)—that suffered damage from heavy rainfall during the recent holiday period.
The ministry will also provide 120 million won in disaster relief project funds to the Daegu and North Gyeongsang regions to support recovery efforts from the rain damage and to respond to the ongoing heat wave.
The recent heavy rain caused road washouts, landslides, and flooded homes in areas including Uiseong and Andong in North Gyeongsang, as well as parts of Gyeonggi and Gangwon, forcing some residents to evacuate temporarily.
The government is currently managing the damage situation by operating the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters at Level 2.
The allocated special disaster grants will be used for emergency repairs of damaged facilities, relief for displaced residents, removal of soil and rock debris, and urgent safety measures for hazardous facilities.
The disaster relief project funds are intended for operating expenses such as air conditioning costs for heat shelters and the purchase of customized relief supplies for vulnerable populations, as a prolonged nationwide heat wave is expected following the recent issuance of the first-ever severe heat wave warnings in Gyeongsan and Pohang, North Gyeongsang.
Previously, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety provided 2.1 billion won in emergency special disaster grants to six cities and provinces—Daejeon, Sejong, Gyeonggi, North Chungcheong (Chungbuk), South Chungcheong (Chungnam), and North Gyeongsang—that were affected by heavy rain from July 8 to 10.
