In India, public anger is spiraling out of control as a series of sexual crimes targeting children, some resulting in death, have occurred within the span of a single month. In June, a case emerged in Rajasthan where a 13-year-old girl was kidnapped and trafficked to a hotel owner, only to be rescued after being sexually assaulted by multiple men over five days.
Following this, in July, horrific incidents occurred in which an 11-year-old and a 7-year-old were sexually assaulted and murdered, prompting citizens to pour into the streets in protest. After the incidents, videos circulated showing citizens beating perpetrators with sticks or even hanging them; however, these were all revealed to be fake news. This suggests that public anger has reached a boiling point, to the extent that such fabricated videos are spreading.
It is estimated that approximately 70,000 sexual crimes against children occur in India annually, averaging one crime every seven minutes. However, a fundamental solution remains difficult due to long trial periods, low conviction rates, and a social atmosphere that makes it difficult to report such crimes. We take a look at the reality of an Indian society that fails to protect its children.
