A Chinese delegation visiting North Korea to mark the 65th anniversary of the signing of the North Korea-China Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance returned home yesterday (July 17) after touring the Wonsan-Kalma Coastal Tourist Area, the North's flagship tourism complex.
The Korean Central News Agency reported today that the Chinese party and government delegation, led by Wang Huning, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), visited the Wonsan-Kalma Coastal Tourist Area the previous day.
Jo Yong-won and Kim Song-nam, secretaries of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) Central Committee, accompanied the delegation.
The delegation toured the coastal scenery while receiving briefings on the current operations and future development prospects of the tourist area's service facilities.
The Wonsan-Kalma Coastal Tourist Area, a key project prioritized by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, opened in July 2025 with the intention of attracting foreign tourists. Observers suggest that North Korea may soon begin efforts to recruit Chinese tourists.
Wang remarked, "It is remarkable that such a tourist area, where excellent buildings are in unique harmony with the natural environment and landscaping is realized at a high level, was built in such a short period." He added, "The establishment of such excellent service facilities for the people is an embodiment and manifestation of the Workers' Party of Korea's ideology of putting the people first."
The delegation was invited to a luncheon hosted by the WPK Kangwon Provincial Committee at the Myongsasimni Hotel.
Having concluded their visit, the delegation departed from the Wonsan-Kalma Airport after receiving a salute from the Korean People's Army honor guard.
The delegation was seen off by secretaries Jo Yong-won and Kim Song-nam, Kim Hyong-sik, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Supreme People's Assembly, Paek Song-guk, Chief Secretary of the WPK Kangwon Provincial Committee, and Wang Yajun, Chinese Ambassador to North Korea.
The Chinese delegation paid a friendly visit to North Korea from July 15 to 17 at the invitation of the WPK Central Committee and the government to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the treaty.
The visit took place shortly after a North Korean delegation led by Premier Pak Tae-song made an official visit to China.
This marks the first visit to North Korea by Wang, who ranks fourth in the Chinese Communist Party hierarchy, since he accompanied then-President Hu Jintao in 2005 while serving as the director of the Central Policy Research Office.
The delegation featured the highest-ranking officials to participate in recent events commemorating the North Korea-China treaty.
During their visit, the delegation met with leader Kim Jong-un and held talks with Party Secretary Jo Yong-won to discuss ways to enhance the welfare of both nations' people through party-to-party exchanges and cooperation in various fields, including economy and culture, demonstrating their strengthened strategic relationship to the international community.
