An emergency disaster alert for "disaster-level heavy rain" was issued for the first time in Suseong-gu, Daegu, tonight (July 17) as 31.5 mm of rain fell in just 15 minutes, with a total of 89.0 mm recorded in one hour.
The emergency alert was sent to the Jisan-dong area of Suseong-gu, Daegu, at 10:10 p.m. tonight.
The emergency disaster alert system for disaster-level heavy rain, introduced this summer, is triggered when the one-hour cumulative precipitation reaches 100 mm or more, or when one-hour precipitation is 85 mm or more combined with 15-minute precipitation of 25 mm or more.
It was introduced to allow for immediate evacuation and response when rainfall reaches a level that is literally a disaster, exceeding the criteria for existing heavy rain emergency alerts.
Existing heavy rain emergency alerts are issued when one-hour precipitation is 50 mm or more and three-hour precipitation is 90 mm or more, or when one-hour precipitation is 72 mm or more.
As of 10:00 p.m., heavy rain warnings are in effect for the southwestern part of Gyeonggi Province, Chungcheong Province, and North Gyeongsang Province. These regions are experiencing rainfall of 30 to 50 mm per hour, accompanied by gusts, thunder, and lightning due to the influence of a stationary front.
In the rest of the Seoul metropolitan area, North Jeolla Province, and the northwestern part of South Gyeongsang Province, relatively light rain of around 5 mm is falling.
As a mesoscale low-pressure system develops along the stationary front, a stronger influx of hot and humid air from the south is expected to bring very heavy rain across the country overnight.
In particular, "extreme heavy rain" of 50 to 80 mm per hour is expected in the southern part of Gyeonggi Province and the northern part of South Chungcheong Province from late dawn to the morning of the 18th; in the rest of the Seoul metropolitan area from late dawn to the morning of the 18th; and in the central and southern inland and mountainous regions of Gangwon Province and the central and northern parts of North Chungcheong Province from the morning to midday on the 18th.
