As the armed conflict between the United States and Iran entered its seventh day on July 17 (local time), concerns over escalation are mounting following confirmation that civilian infrastructure in Gulf nations has been struck.
Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy stated that Iran targeted power plants and seawater desalination facilities within Kuwait, resulting in facility damage, fires, and destruction of power generation equipment.
Authorities explained that they have extinguished the fires and have begun restoration work on the facilities.
Condemning Iran's latest military action as a "heinous act of aggression," Kuwaiti authorities urged citizens and residents to "conserve electricity."
The Associated Press reported that Kuwait supplies approximately 90 percent of its drinking water through desalination facilities, and any disruption to this process could pose a serious threat.
This move by Iran is drawing attention as it comes immediately after the U.S. military expanded its airstrike targets against Iran to include civilian facilities such as railway junctions and bridges the previous day.
Iran has not yet released a statement regarding the strikes on Kuwaiti infrastructure.
On July 14, U.S. President Donald Trump remarked, "If they don't come to the table and negotiate, we will take down all of their power plants."
As Iran had previously warned that it could retaliate by targeting infrastructure within Gulf nations, tensions across the Middle East are expected to heighten further if attacks targeting facilities such as power plants intensify.
Majid Mousavi, commander of the Aerospace Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), stated in a declaration on this day, "We will continue effective and precise attacks against the enemy until peace comes to the southern coastline and the Strait of Hormuz."
Commander Mousavi emphasized his resolve to continue retaliating against U.S. military actions targeting military facilities near the Strait of Hormuz, stating, "Tehran and the south are one inseparable Iran."
