The police special investigation unit has secured testimonies indicating that the initial investigation team had identified evidence suggesting Jang Yoon-gi knew the teenage victim long before the crime, and that they had reported concerns about this to their superiors. The investigation is now accelerating to determine whether these concerns were suppressed by higher-ups, and if so, how far up the chain of command the involvement reaches.
Reporter Son Gijun has the story.

"Evidence has been discovered suggesting that Jang Yoon-gi knew the teenage victim before the crime." This was revealed by the National Police Agency's special investigation unit during a briefing on the interim results of their investigation on July 15.
According to the special investigation unit, this evidence was found on a spare mobile phone used by Jang Yoon-gi and was identified during the initial investigation, yet no further follow-up was conducted.
If these circumstances are true, they serve as a crucial clue indicating that Jang Yoon-gi may have been targeting the teenage victim from before the crime took place.
The special investigation unit reportedly secured testimonies to the effect that members of the initial investigation team had discussed the matter after discovering these signs, questioning, "Isn't this a problem?"
They are said to have testified that they reported this to the then-team leader, Inspector A, but received no particular response.
The indictment for this case states that after spotting the teenage victim, Jang Yoon-gi began following her in his vehicle. It notes that while the victim walked for 1.2 km, Jang drove in the same direction, stopping or getting out of the car a total of four times to check her path.
The special investigation unit is conducting further inquiries to verify whether these circumstances are true.
In response, Inspector A's side refuted the claims, stating that they were unaware of the existence of such evidence on the mobile phone and that they were never asked about it even once during the special investigation unit's questioning.
They further claimed that they had no knowledge of the matter until the police publicly disclosed the existence of the evidence.
