A story about a consumer who experienced an absurd situation after purchasing a domestic electric SUV has become a hot topic.
The informant purchased a domestic electric vehicle worth over 70 million won on July 3. However, unidentified bugs were discovered all over the vehicle upon delivery, and the informant even captured footage of the insects crawling inside the car.
[Interview / Victim of bug-infested vehicle: I bought a car, but there were so many bugs coming out. I tried using insecticide, steam cleaning, and even professional pest control, but nothing worked.]
Despite repeated pest control and car washes, the situation did not improve. The family was left in a state of anxiety after bugs were even found in their baby's shoes.
The vehicle was a "stock car" that had been stored in an outdoor yard for three months after a previous buyer refused delivery due to minor scratches. Experts suspect that during this period, a bird built a nest inside the passenger-side wheel house, and the bugs proliferated from that nest.
[Interview / Cho Sam-rae, Professor Emeritus of Life Science at Kongju National University: Daurian redstarts often build nests inside car engines or near the wheels. As the birds come and go, they drop excrement, bits of plastic, and food scraps around the nest, which can attract bugs that feed on them.]
The SBS News Hunters production team contacted the manufacturer of the electric vehicle to ask about the circumstances of the incident, but received only a standard response: "It was a location difficult to detect during standard pre-delivery inspections."
The dealership that sold the car initially offered 300,000 won in compensation and proposed only replacing the wheel house where the bird's nest was found. However, after the informant posted about the incident on an electric vehicle online community, the manufacturer contacted the owner and offered to replace the vehicle entirely.
Netizens who heard about the incident reacted with various comments, including witty remarks like, "I bought a new car, but I got a 'bird' car," while others added, "The owner is incredibly patient," and "It truly lives up to being an eco-friendly car that cares about nature."
