U.S. President Donald Trump has paid over 8 billion won in damages to fashion columnist E. Jean Carroll, the victim of a sexual abuse incident that occurred approximately 30 years ago, following a court ruling that confirmed the allegations, The New York Times (NYT) reported on the 14th (local time), citing court records.
On June 29, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review the lower court's ruling in the sexual abuse case that President Trump had lost.
As a result, the original decision requiring President Trump to pay 5 million dollars in damages and accrued interest to Carroll remains in effect.
President Trump harshly criticized the Supreme Court's decision, stating that he would "continue to fight."
Carroll filed a civil lawsuit for damages, alleging that she was sexually assaulted by President Trump in a dressing room at the Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan, New York, in the mid-1990s, and won the case in May 2023.
At the time, the jury concluded that while there was no evidence of rape, it was established that President Trump had sexually abused Carroll.
Conversely, President Trump has denied the allegations of sexual assault, claiming that he did not know Carroll and that she was lying.
After appealing the first-instance decision, the second-instance court also upheld the initial ruling, leading President Trump to file an appeal with the Supreme Court in November of last year.
Carroll has also filed a separate lawsuit against President Trump seeking damages for defamation.
Regarding that case, a first-instance court ordered President Trump to pay 83.3 million dollars (approximately 128.5 billion won) in damages in January 2024, and the second-instance court upheld this decision in September of last year.
