A fire broke out at Ajou University Hospital in Yeongtong-gu, Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, at approximately 4:35 p.m. today (July 13) and was extinguished about two hours later.
Due to the fire, approximately 1,500 people, including patients and medical staff, evacuated on their own. No casualties have been reported.
After receiving a report from a witness stating, "Smoke is visible from the hospital," the fire department deployed 40 pieces of equipment and 111 personnel to the scene. They brought the major flames under control by around 6:00 p.m., about 1 hour and 20 minutes after the initial report, and fully extinguished the fire by 6:30 p.m.
Police believe the fire started inside a fast-food restaurant located on the first basement level of the hospital building.
Police and fire authorities plan to investigate the exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage.
