▲ Ministry of Agriculture and Food's Heatwave Damage Inspection Meeting
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced today (July 12) that it is implementing heatwave damage prevention measures across various sectors, including the prevention of heat-related illnesses in rural areas and minimizing damage to livestock and crops.
The Ministry held an inspection meeting today at the Agricultural Disaster Response Situation Room, presided over by Minister Song Mi-ryung, to review measures for farmer safety, crops, and livestock.
The Ministry is working with relevant agencies to implement prevention measures for each sector.
To prevent harm to farmers, the Ministry will strengthen patrols by mobilizing heat-related illness prevention personnel from the Rural Development Administration and staff from agricultural cooperatives nationwide, while also providing guidance on safety protocols during heatwaves.
To reduce livestock damage and lower temperatures in barns, the Ministry will provide emergency water supply support using disinfection vehicles from local governments and agricultural cooperatives, and supply equipment such as cooling systems.
To mitigate crop damage, the Ministry is operating a growth management council to monitor crop conditions based on weather patterns. It aims to prevent poor harvests through the application of nutrients, support for pest control, and emergency water supply.
Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Song Mi-ryung stated, "When a serious heatwave warning is issued, farmers must immediately stop agricultural work and refrain from going out to fields or paddies," adding, "We will mobilize all available resources to protect the lives and safety of farmers and minimize damage to crops and livestock."
The first serious heatwave warnings of the year were issued today in Gyeongsan and Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do.
As for livestock, 27,000 animals have died, which is approximately 3% of the figure from the same period last year (910,000 animals).
There have been no reports of farmer deaths due to heatwaves in rural fields, paddies, or greenhouses.
