Candidates for the Democratic Party leadership continued their regional campaigns to appeal for support today, Saturday (July 11).
Kim Min-seok, former Prime Minister, met with party members at the Yongin-gap regional committee office today and stated, "I have been working in sync with President Lee Jae-myung for the past three years, and having participated in the national policy design process, my philosophical understanding is very similar to the President's." He added, "Isn't it the case that I am the one who can support him best right now?"
Kim said, "If you look at the June 3 local elections arithmetically, we won, but it was a bit unsettling to call it a comfortable victory, and in some cases, party approval ratings are shown to be flipped (with the People Power Party)." He asked rhetorically, "They are calling us an insurrectionist force; can we afford to fall behind in approval ratings and lose?"
He continued, "Please help me get elected with strength," adding, "If I do well, I think we can win by 1%."
He also emphasized, "When former President Roh Moo-hyun was a candidate (for the presidential election), candidate Rhee In-je was the frontrunner, and he attacked him fiercely during the primary. Looking back, I understand why that happened. A national convention is a fierce debate to move toward the right path."
Former representative Jung Chung-rae focused on his social media campaign again today.
On Facebook, Jung said, "The person who will protect President Lee Jae-myung to the end is Jung Chung-rae. Do not worry," and added, "The right person to achieve 'four-way integration' (Kim Dae-jung, Roh Moo-hyun, Moon Jae-in, and Lee Jae-myung) within the party, and integration and solidarity outside the party, as well as a pan-democratic progressive alliance, is Jung Chung-rae."
He further stated, "Victory in the general election and re-creation of the government through a pan-progressive alliance. The person you can trust is Jung Chung-rae."
In another post, Jung wrote, "The sovereignty of the Republic of Korea resides in the people, and all power comes from the people," and declared, "The party power of the Democratic Party resides in the party members, and all party power comes from the party members."
He appealed, "I am looking only at the public sentiment and the party sentiment," and added, "Please protect Jung Chung-rae with one vote per party member."
Jung, who met with citizens at the Cheongju Yukgeori Market the previous day, visited the memorial altar for the victims of the Osong underpass disaster, which was set up at the temporary Cheongju City Hall building, today.
Representative Song Young-gil, who announced his bid for the party leadership in Gwangju, South Jeolla Province, on the 9th, has been targeting Honam sentiment for three consecutive days.
Song held a meeting with the Traditional Market Association in Iksan today and met with citizens at a local market.
Song said, "Our party cannot afford to waste the precious four years of President Lee Jae-myung," adding, "How we utilize this period depends on what we do. I will help with what can be helped at the National Assembly level."
Song is scheduled to hold a town hall meeting for party members with voting rights at Wonkwang University in the afternoon.
Song also held a town hall meeting at the Yeomju Gymnasium in Gwangju, South Jeolla Province, the previous day.
Representative Ko Min-jung is scheduled to meet with self-employed individuals, office workers, and young and female party members in Chilgok, North Gyeongsang Province, this afternoon.
