▲ Jang Yoon-gi, convicted of murdering a high school girl
The special investigation team of the National Office of Investigation, which is looking into allegations of misconduct in the investigation of the Jang Yoon-gi case—a convicted murderer of a high school girl—has expanded its probe to the police command, including conducting a raid on the office of the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency Commissioner.
The special investigation team sent investigators to the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency Commissioner's office and the Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station Chief's office this morning (July 11) to execute search and seizure warrants.
Having already arrested Police Inspector A, a team leader in the detective division of the Gwangsan Police Station who was in charge of the Jang Yoon-gi case, on charges of destroying evidence, the special investigation team has now launched raids on the high-ranking officials who were in the chain of command at the time.
Authorities are currently securing evidence from a total of seven locations, including three sites at the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency, two at the Gwangsan Police Station, and the current offices of officials involved at the time.
The Gwangju District Prosecutors Office, which is investigating suspicions of evidence destruction and the leaking of investigation information during the process from Jang Yoon-gi's arrest to his referral to the prosecution, also booked the Gwangsan Police Station Chief and the head of the detective division yesterday. Consequently, investigations into this matter are being conducted simultaneously by both the prosecution and the police.
