A special police investigation team has launched a search and seizure operation targeting the office of the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency commissioner and other facilities in connection with allegations of misconduct during the investigation of Jang Yoon-gi, who was convicted of murdering a high school girl.
The special investigation team announced that it conducted raids on a total of seven locations this morning (July 11), including the commissioner's office and the office of the chief of the criminal division at the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency.
The offices of the chief and the criminal division of the Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station, which handled the initial investigation, were also included in the search.
The move is interpreted as an expansion of the investigation toward those in the chain of command at the time, following the special investigation team's arrest of the Gwangsan Police Station's investigation team leader on charges of evidence destruction.
A police official explained to SBS, "We are conducting the search and seizure to secure evidence related to the charges against the investigation team leader, and there are no additional individuals booked at this time."
Meanwhile, the investigation into allegations of evidence destruction and the leaking of investigative information that emerged after Jang's arrest is gaining momentum, with the prosecution having booked the Gwangsan Police Station chief and the chief of the criminal division yesterday and initiated its own compulsory investigation.
