A woman in her 60s has been sentenced to 10 years in prison in the first trial for killing her husband during a domestic dispute.
On Friday, July 10, the Seoul Southern District Court (Presiding Judge Noh Yu-kyung) sentenced the defendant, identified by her surname Yoo (69), to 10 years in prison on charges of murder.
The court also ordered Yoo to serve three years of probation.
Yoo is accused of killing her husband, also in his 60s, at their home in Deungchon-dong, Gangseo-gu, Seoul, on December 5 of last year, around 3:00 p.m., while arguing over her suspicion that he was having an affair.
Police, who were dispatched following a report from the family, arrested Yoo in an emergency operation approximately four hours after the incident occurred.
The court stated, "Once a human life is taken, the damage is irreversible, and the defendant's culpability is extremely heavy considering the method and outcome of the crime."
The court further explained the sentencing, noting, "The defendant failed to properly manage her schizophrenia with medication, despite the availability of treatment, which led to the commission of this crime."
However, the court added, "We have taken into account that her state of mental and physical infirmity due to schizophrenia influenced the crime, and that the bereaved family, who are also the defendant's family, have requested leniency."
