SBS has confirmed that the police have summoned a key investigator from the team handling the case of Jang Yoon-gi, who is suspected of leaking official secrets.
The National Police Agency's special investigation team summoned Police Sergeant A, who is affiliated with the Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station, today (July 10).
Sergeant A is suspected of leaking investigation-related information to Jang’s father, a police inspector surnamed Jang, while investigating the murder of a high school girl by Jang Yoon-gi last May. The team leader, Police Inspector B, was recently arrested on charges including destruction of evidence.
Sergeant A is known to have built a relationship with Inspector Jang while working at the same patrol division in the past. Prosecutors have secured records of multiple phone calls and some audio files between Inspector Jang, who destroyed key evidence such as a real doll during the investigation into Jang Yoon-gi's case, and Sergeant A.
It is reported that the files contain content where Sergeant A addresses Inspector Jang as "senior" and says, "Everyone is keeping quiet about the fact that Jang Yoon-gi is from a police family. I told them to keep their mouths shut."
Having captured these circumstances, the prosecution booked Sergeant A and Inspector B on charges including leaking official secrets and destruction of evidence, and summoned Sergeant A for questioning as a suspect yesterday (July 9).
The summons of Sergeant A marks the first such investigation since the National Police Agency's special investigation team was formed. The police plan to intensively question Sergeant A regarding the circumstances behind the multiple phone calls with Inspector Jang and whether any information regarding the investigation was leaked.
In addition, the police plan to begin full-scale in-person questioning of Inspector B, who is currently in custody, starting today.
