President Lee Jae-myung and First Lady Kim Hye-kyung disembark from Air Force One, greeted by an honor guard wearing traditional Mongolian helmets and Foreign Minister Battsetseg Batmunkh.
This marks the first time in 15 years that a South Korean president has visited Mongolia on a state visit.
President Lee begins his official schedule with a summit meeting with Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh.
The two sides are expected to sign memorandums of understanding (MOUs) in various fields, including trade, culture, and education, with particular attention focused on cooperation regarding supply chains for minerals and other resources.
In an interview with a Mongolian state-run news agency, President Lee emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation, stating, "Mongolia, which possesses excellent mineral resources and growth potential, and South Korea, which holds mineral exploration and development technology as well as manufacturing innovation capabilities, can become important partners in supply chain cooperation."
The two leaders are also scheduled to announce a joint declaration on "The Golden Age of Korea-Mongolia Relations," which contains a future vision for bilateral ties.
Discussions regarding peace on the Korean Peninsula are also possible.
Mongolia was the second country to establish diplomatic relations with North Korea after the former Soviet Union and maintains traditional friendly ties with the North.
The Office of the President expressed expectations that since Mongolia also actively supports the establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula, it could contribute to progress in the situation on the peninsula, such as the resumption of dialogue with North Korea.
President Lee will conclude the first day of his state visit by delivering a keynote speech at the Korea-Mongolia Business Forum, where government and business officials from both countries will discuss economic cooperation measures.
