▲ Joint press conference by three major teachers' organizations demanding a halt to the reform of local education grants
Three major teachers' organizations have demanded that the government immediately stop discussions on reforming the local education finance grant system.
The Korean Federation of Teachers' Associations (KFTA), the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union (KTU), and the Teachers' Union Federation held a joint press conference in front of the Government Complex Seoul on the morning of July 8 to express their position.
They argued, "The local education finance grant is not merely a mechanism for budget allocation, but an institutional foundation for state responsibility to ensure basic educational conditions for all students, regardless of where they live in the country."
They added, "Undermining this foundation is an act that threatens not only schools but also the learning environment of students and the working conditions of teachers."
The teachers' organizations emphasized, "The government's forums on these grants must not become a venue for creating a pretext to reduce education funding by citing the decline in the number of students."
