HMM announced on July 7 that it has launched the first voyage of its new container service, "MA2 (Mediterranean West Africa)," which connects Spain and West Africa.
The MA2 service is the first route under the company's "Hub & Spoke" strategy, serving as a feeder network for European and African shipping lanes.
It centers on Algeciras, Spain—a key port of call for the Far East-India-Mediterranean deep-sea route and the location of an HMM-operated terminal—and connects it to major ports in West Africa.
The MA2 service, which utilizes five feeder vessels, takes 35 days for a round trip. It calls at ports including Algeciras, Tangier in Morocco, Dakar in Senegal, Tema in Ghana, Lekki in Nigeria, and Abidjan in Ivory Coast.
HMM explained that by operating the West African port section, which often experiences high congestion, as a separate service, the company can improve the schedule reliability of its mega-vessels while maintaining the flexibility to adjust ports of call within the feeder network.
