People Power Party Secretary-General Jung Hee-yong announced that he will propose a new amendment to the Information and Communications Network Act to remove what he described as poisonous clauses, following the implementation of the revised act starting today (July 7).
In a post on his social media today, Secretary-General Jung wrote, "While regulation on fake news and false, manipulated information is necessary, there is a very high possibility that this law will be misused as a tool to 'silence' healthy checks and criticism directed at power by labeling them as 'false information'."
He further expressed concern, stating, "In particular, if strong regulations become possible in online spaces, there is a significant risk that the freedom of expression of ordinary citizens will be stifled and infringed upon."
Secretary-General Jung also argued, "The shadow of 'silencing' is also looming over the National Assembly," adding, "The Democratic Party is showing arrogance by attempting to neutralize even the 'filibuster,' which is the minimum legal defensive measure granted to a minority party."
He added, "Attempting to suppress the people's freedom of expression and even blocking the opposition party's opportunity for oversight is no different from threatening democracy."
Secretary-General Jung emphasized, "The People Power Party will protect the people's freedom of expression by correcting the poisonous clauses through a re-amendment of the Information and Communications Network Act, and we will firmly stand against the Democratic Party's tyranny that undermines parliamentary democracy, together with the people."
