The Presidential Office announced that regarding the Honam region semiconductor cluster project, one of the government's three major mega-projects, it has been decided to build the industrial complex on the site of the Gwangju Military Airport.
Kang Hoon-sik, Chief of Staff to the President, stated in a briefing that the decision was reached during the "Mega-Project Public-Private Joint Inspection Meeting" presided over by President Lee Jae-myung earlier today (July 6). He added, "The government will finalize the site selection process promptly following consultations with relevant ministries."
Chief of Staff Kang explained, "Companies suggested that among the candidate sites in the Honam region, the Gwangju Military Airport is the most suitable location. The Gwangju Military Airport area can secure a site of approximately 2.5 million pyeong (about 8.26 square kilometers), and because the land has already been leveled due to the nature of the airport, it has the advantage of minimizing the construction period."
He added, "It was also reviewed that the site is adjacent to downtown Gwangju and the KTX station, offering strengths in terms of securing human resources and residential conditions, and possesses excellent logistics accessibility connected to roads, airports, and ports."
Chief of Staff Kang also conveyed that they have decided to accelerate the project by holding public-private joint inspection meetings presided over by President Lee, such as the one held today, on a monthly basis.
"Through these meetings, we have decided to check the progress of the key tasks of the three major mega-projects by region, not just the semiconductor cluster, one by one," said Kang.
He continued, "In particular, as President Lee stated he would personally oversee the project by establishing a dedicated organization at the Presidential Office, we will appoint a high-profile figure to lead the organization to inspect the progress of each task across the mega-projects and oversee inter-ministerial coordination."
