Man in His 60s Arrested for Assaulting Police During Parliamentary Committee's Entry to Jamsil Counting Station

A man in his 60s has been arrested for assaulting a police officer while obstructing the National Assembly's special investigation committee from entering the Jamsil ballot counting station to investigate the shortage of ballot papers during the June 3 local elections.

The Seoul Eastern District Court issued the arrest warrant today (July 4) after holding a pre-arrest interrogation (warrant validity hearing) for the man, identified as A, who is facing charges of obstruction of justice. The court stated that there is a risk of him fleeing.

A is accused of pushing and assaulting a police officer around 1:10 p.m. on July 2 at the Olympic Handball Gymnasium in Songpa-gu, Seoul, while police were removing protesters who were blocking the special committee's entry.

At the time, the protesters, who were attempting to block the special committee from conducting an on-site investigation, linked arms and refused to move, claiming that the committee could not enter without a warrant, before being removed one by one by the police.

In response, the police explained that the action was not a forced dispersal, but rather a relocation measure based on the Police Duties Execution Act.
