A woman in her 50s has been arrested by police for spreading false information alleging that prominent politicians committed serious crimes, including sex work and drug use.
The Seoul Yeongdeungpo Police Station announced that it had apprehended the woman, identified as A, and arrested her on Friday on charges of defamation under the Information and Communications Network Act.
A is accused of posting claims on her social media accounts between August and September 2024, alleging that specific politicians who have served as party leaders or floor leaders were involved in murder, sex crimes, and corruption.
The posts contained false allegations, including claims that "Lawmaker B used drugs at a brothel and committed murder," "Lawmaker C accepted tens of billions of won in bribes," and "Lawmaker D sexually assaulted dozens of people."
The political parties to which the lawmakers belong filed complaints, prompting the police to launch an investigation.
The police did not disclose the specific identities of the victims, such as the names of the lawmakers or their political parties, citing concerns over potential secondary victimization.
