As early heatwaves persisted throughout last month, the national average temperature was recorded at 22.2°C (72°F), which is 0.8°C (1.4°F) higher than the historical average.
According to the 'June 2026 Climate Characteristics Analysis' released by the Korea Meteorological Administration, the continuous influx of warm, humid air influenced by typhoons and other factors led to abnormal high-temperature phenomena, including new record-high temperatures in some regions during mid-June.
In Seoul, the tropical nights that had occurred for four consecutive years in June did not happen this year, and the total number of heatwave days remained at the historical average level.
The Korea Meteorological Administration explained that this was due to a 'blocking' phenomenon that obstructed the flow of upper-level air around the Arctic and various high-latitude regions of the Northern Hemisphere, causing cold air to periodically flow into the upper atmosphere over Korea.
