The U.S. Trump administration claimed on July 2 (local time) that the South Korean government is targeting Coupang in connection with the recent massive personal data leak incident.
In response to inquiries from South Korean media regarding a report on Coupang released the previous day by the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, a White House official stated, "The Trump administration is deeply concerned about the South Korean government discriminatorily targeting American technology companies."
The official further emphasized, "By any reasonable standard, the Lee Jae-myung administration is singling out Coupang."
The official added, "The Trump administration will not tolerate unfair trade practices, including restrictions on market access for U.S. digital services."
This stance from the White House is interpreted as largely supporting the contents regarding Coupang in the U.S. House Judiciary Committee report, which alleges that South Korea is discriminating against U.S. companies.
The 35-page report, released the previous day, is facing controversy for reflecting the company's one-sided claims almost entirely.
However, the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed regret over the report, stating that it unilaterally reflects only Coupang's claims, is factually incorrect, and fails to incorporate the positions and facts that the South Korean government has previously explained to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee.
The National Intelligence Service also issued a rebuttal statement, calling the claims made by Coupang in the report "clearly false."
