The U.S. Trump administration claimed on July 2 (local time) that the South Korean government is targeting Coupang in relation to the recent data breach controversy.
In response to an inquiry from Yonhap News regarding a report on Coupang released the previous day by the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, a White House official stated, "The Trump administration is deeply concerned about the South Korean government's discriminatory targeting of U.S. technology companies."
The official further remarked, "By any reasonable standard, the Lee Jae-myung administration is singling out Coupang."
The official added, "The Trump administration will not tolerate unfair trade practices, including restrictions on market access for U.S. digital services."
The White House's stance appears to largely support the contents regarding Coupang found in the U.S. House Judiciary Committee report, which alleges that South Korea is discriminating against U.S. firms.
The 35-page report, released the previous day, is facing controversy for presenting the company's one-sided claims almost entirely as fact.
However, the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed regret over the report, stating that it reflects only the claims of Coupang, is inconsistent with the facts, and fails to incorporate the explanations and facts previously provided by the South Korean government to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee.
The National Intelligence Service also issued a rebuttal statement, labeling the claims made by Coupang in the report as "clearly false."
