Following Japan's elimination in the Round of 32 at the North and Central America World Cup, and amid ongoing deliberations over the next national team manager, Japanese football legend Keisuke Honda has personally proposed himself for the role.
Honda took to his social media today (July 2) to share his thoughts, stating, "I know there will be pros and cons, but I would like to say one thing."
"I saw the news that a one-year contract extension has been offered to manager Moriyasu," Honda wrote. "If you are considering extending the contract as a stopgap measure because you cannot find a candidate for the next manager, please test me for one year."
He added, "If I fail at the Asian Cup, you can dismiss me regardless of the reason. I will gladly accept that challenge."
The Japanese national team, led by manager Moriyasu, reached the Round of 32 in this North and Central America World Cup but saw their tournament run end in disappointment after a 1-2 comeback loss to Brazil.
Manager Moriyasu, who took the helm of the Japanese national team after the 2018 Russia World Cup, saw his contract expire at the end of this World Cup. However, some reports have suggested that he could be retained for one year, considering preparations for the Asian Cup to be held in Saudi Arabia next year.
Honda, who played for clubs including AC Milan in Italy, is considered a legend of Japanese football, having scored 37 goals in 98 appearances for the national team.
Honda, who served as a TV commentator for all four of Japan's matches in this North and Central America World Cup, has expressed his desire to manage the national team on several occasions. When asked after the Brazil match where he sees himself in four years at the 2030 World Cup, he replied, "I have a strong desire to stand on the pitch as a manager. I am confident that I can do it."
However, Japanese media reported, "To become the manager of the Japanese national team, one must hold a 'JFA Pro License' certified by the Japan Football Association," adding, "Currently, Honda has not obtained that qualification."
