A multinational rescue team is engaged in a desperate struggle to save a man in his 40s who has been trapped for eight days under the rubble of a building collapsed by a series of earthquakes in Venezuela.
According to AFP on July 2 (local time), a joint rescue team from seven countries has been conducting rescue operations for three days at the site of a collapsed building in Catia La Mar, a port city in the state of La Guaira, Venezuela, to reach survivor Hernan Gil (43).
Gil, a security guard, was trapped while inside his guard post in a seven-story building where he worked when the major earthquake struck on June 24.
The rescue team stated that they reached a point within 1 meter of where Gil is trapped overnight, but they are proceeding with the rescue operation cautiously to prevent further collapse of the surrounding debris.
Gil's wife, Gusbimar Gonzalez, told AFP, "It is amazing to see so many countries joining forces to save one person," as she anxiously awaited her husband's safe return.
Hundreds of rescue workers from seven countries—Venezuela, Chile, the United States, Portugal, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Mexico—are participating in the rescue operation for Gil.
The powerful earthquake in Venezuela has so far resulted in 2,295 officially confirmed deaths and 11,267 injuries.
As the death toll continues to rise, the Venezuelan government declared a week-long period of national mourning starting at 6:00 PM on July 1.
