SpaceX, the aerospace company led by Elon Musk, is expanding its interest beyond AI model development into the business of devices equipped with artificial intelligence.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on July 1 (local time) that SpaceX showcased a prototype of an AI device in the form of a handset to some investors ahead of a potential initial public offering (IPO).
According to sources, the prototype features a design that is thinner and sleeker than an iPhone and is designed to integrate and utilize xAI technology.
It is expected to run on a proprietary operating system (OS) and use Qualcomm's Snapdragon chipset.
However, the project is still in its early stages, and neither the final design nor the actual production of the device has been confirmed.
Entering the hardware manufacturing business is a significant challenge for a company without prior experience in the field.
In October of last year, Musk remarked, "I would rather die than think about making a phone, but if we are in a situation where we have to, we will do it."
In February of this year, there were reports that SpaceX would create a device capable of using its satellite phone service, Starlink, but Musk personally denied these claims.
Beyond SpaceX, other companies are also interested in developing devices such as smartphones or headsets that allow users to perform various activities—from money transfers and ordering to gaming—centered around their own AI.
China's ByteDance has released a smartphone powered by its AI model, Doubao, and OpenAI is also reportedly developing its own AI device.
