Roh Tae-ak: "I Will Return Spouse's Overseas Travel Expenses to State Treasury or Donate to Charity"

Former National Election Commission (NEC) Chairperson Roh Tae-ak stated today (July 1) that he would "return the expenses for my spouse's overseas trips to the state treasury or donate them to society in an appropriate manner," in response to the controversy surrounding his spouse accompanying him on official overseas business trips during his tenure.

During a plenary session of the National Assembly's special investigation committee held today, Roh responded to a question from committee member Yoon Sang-hyun of the People Power Party regarding the costs of his spouse's travel, saying, "I have requested detailed data," and provided the aforementioned answer.

Roh said, "According to media reports, it appears that the cost for my spouse was approximately 33 million won for airfare, and I will verify the remaining accommodation and meal expenses as soon as the data arrives," adding, "I will humbly accept any moral or political reprimand."

When asked by committee member Yoon whether the overseas trips were related to the duties of the NEC Chairperson, Roh bowed his head and said, "I deeply acknowledge and reflect on the fact that it was highly inappropriate from the public's perspective."

Previously, it was revealed that Roh had been accompanied by his spouse on all three overseas trips he took while in office.

However, this fact was not included in the post-trip reports that the NEC discloses to the public, which sparked controversy.
