An elderly person in their 60s was safely rescued by police after wandering along the median of a highway.
The Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency stated that they received a report at approximately 6:39 p.m. on June 16 that an elderly individual was wandering near the median at the 75km mark of the northbound lanes of the Honam Expressway in Buk-gu, Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City, Jeollanam-do.
It was determined that the elderly person, who had difficulty communicating, was rambling and crossing between highway lanes at the time.
The situation was particularly dangerous, as several vehicles were passing by at high speeds, nearly resulting in a major traffic accident.
Police tracked the elderly person's location in real-time using closed-circuit (CCTV) cameras and rescued them safely just 9 minutes after receiving the report.
An investigation revealed that the individual had left their home near the highway, became lost, and wandered onto the expressway.
An official from the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency explained, "We safely handed over the rescued individual to a care facility, and it is a fortunate case where a major accident was prevented through quick judgment."
The official added, "We will continue to do our best to be a police force that protects the lives and safety of the public."
