The Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) announced on July 1 that it held the "National Assembly Speaker-KCCI Economic Great Leap Forward Meeting" at the KCCI Chamber Lounge in Jung-gu, Seoul.
This meeting was the first official discussion between National Assembly Speaker Cho Jeong-sik and the business community since he took office. It was organized to explore ways to cooperate on recovering the people's livelihoods and establishing a foundation for sustainable growth.
Participants delivered the difficulties faced by companies and policy recommendations to the National Assembly, focusing on three key agendas: the direction of AI policy, the roles of the National Assembly and the business sector regarding youth employment, and plans for revitalizing local economies and balanced regional development.
The National Assembly and the business community agreed to maintain regular communication on economic issues. The KCCI stated that it would strengthen communication to ensure that the voices from corporate sites are reflected in the legislative and policy-making processes.
During the closed-door session, business representatives suggested that support is needed to foster the physical AI and robotics ecosystem.
They explained that as AI has emerged as a core factor determining competitiveness in industrial sites, it is necessary to create an ecosystem through measures such as generating initial demand via public sector robot adoption and building data infrastructure.
Along with this, they requested the refinement of related systems, such as establishing a responsibility framework for AI and robot operations and simplifying approval procedures for data centers. They also called for the designation of mega-special zones for robotics and hydrogen, the creation of RE100 industrial complexes, and the resolution of related regulations.
There were also calls to strengthen the competitiveness of high-tech strategic industries by providing legislative support to prevent the leakage of advanced technologies and by expanding the scope of the National High-Tech Strategic Industry Act to include core new materials in the aerospace and defense sectors.
Meanwhile, the meeting was attended by four representatives from the National Assembly, including Speaker Cho Jeong-sik, Lee Jeong-hee, Chief of Staff for Political Affairs to the Speaker, Yoon Sang-eun, Chief of Staff for Policy to the Speaker, and Jang Hyun-joo, Chief of Staff for Public Communication to the Speaker.
From the business community, 15 representatives attended, including KCCI Chairman Chey Tae-won, SK Vice Chairman Lee Hyung-hee, Korean Air President Woo Kee-hong, Samsung Electronics President Park Seung-hee, Hyundai Motor President Sung Kim, and LG President Ha Bum-jong.
