The Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Facilities Corporation announced that they have constructed the first observation-deck style drowsy driving rest area on a motor-vehicle-only road in Seoul, which opens today (July 1) on the Olympic Expressway.
The initiative aims to reduce accidents caused by drowsy driving by providing rest spaces on motor-vehicle-only roads within the city, which previously lacked such facilities.
According to the corporation, four accidents caused by drowsy driving occurred over the five-year period from 2021 to last year along the 43.1-kilometer stretch of the Olympic Expressway.
In response, the city pushed for the introduction of drowsy driving rest areas on motor-vehicle-only roads, leading to the debut of this facility on the Olympic Expressway.
Located at the southern end of the Olympic Bridge, the rest area is equipped with 27 parking spaces, restrooms, and an indoor lounge.
It also features an observation deck and a walking path.
The city explained that the facility was designed as an urban-style multi-purpose rest area where drivers can ensure their safety, take a break, and enjoy the scenery.
Starting with this location, the city plans to review the installation of additional rest areas on other sections of the city's motor-vehicle-only roads.
Han Byeong-yong, head of the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Disaster and Safety Management Office, said, "We hope this urban-style multi-purpose rest area will not only protect the lives of drivers but also become a 'safe comma' where they can relieve fatigue amidst the beautiful scenery of the Han River."
