President Lee Jae-myung approved the appointment of Han Seong-sook as Prime Minister today (June 30), according to Kang Yu-jung, Senior Presidential Secretary for Spokesperson Affairs.
The effective date of Prime Minister Han's appointment is July 1.
With this, Han will take office as the 50th Prime Minister and the second to serve under the Lee Jae-myung administration.
This also marks the appointment of the second female Prime Minister in South Korean history, 20 years after Han Myeong-sook became the first woman to hold the office in 2006.
Previously, the motion for Prime Minister Han's appointment was passed by the National Assembly with 166 votes in favor and 1 invalid vote out of 167 members present.
The vote was processed under the leadership of the ruling bloc parties, including the Democratic Party of Korea, the Rebuilding Korea Party, and the Progressive Party, amid a boycott by the People Power Party.
