▲ People Power Party Representative Jang Dong-hyuk speaks at the "Youth and University Student Debate on the June 3 Disenfranchisement Crisis," held at the National Assembly on June 30 to call for the dissolution and reform of the corrupt and incompetent National Election Commission and to demand a re-election.
People Power Party Representative Jang Dong-hyuk stated, "If we ignore the cries from Olympic Park and do not fight alongside them with our lives on the line, the blame will ultimately fall on the politicians who stood by with their arms crossed."
Representative Jang attended the "Youth and University Student Debate on the June 3 Disenfranchisement Crisis," hosted by the party's youth bureau at the National Assembly this afternoon (June 30), to call for the dissolution and reform of the corrupt and incompetent National Election Commission (NEC) and to demand a re-election.
At the event, Representative Jang said, "We must ensure that the young people and citizens guarding this place can return to their daily lives as soon as possible. That is the job of politics."
He continued, "The voices of the citizens are demanding that we reform the NEC and establish a trustworthy election system," and declared, "It was the cries of the citizens that led to the acceptance of the special counsel investigation yesterday. Therefore, I will call this special counsel for the protection of suffrage a 'People's Special Counsel'."
He added, "Only a special counsel recommended by the People Power Party can uncover the truth. A special counsel recommended by the Democratic Party would be no different from the joint investigation headquarters. It would be a fraudulent special counsel," and continued, "We must prepare thoroughly to correct the flawed election and hold a re-election based on the results of the special counsel."
Youth Supreme Council member Woo Jae-jun, who attended the debate, argued, "In the past, when the Board of Audit and Inspection tried to conduct an audit, the NEC filed a constitutional complaint, claiming it would not be audited because it is an independent organization. Unfortunately, the Constitutional Court sided with the NEC." He added, "We can create an independent audit body that reflects those past criticisms and is free of unconstitutionality. We must audit the NEC through that body to ensure such incidents never happen again."
Representative Yoon Sang-hyun, chairman of the Special Committee on the National Assembly Investigation into the NEC, remarked, "We have K-pop, K-food, and K-culture, but South Korea is currently in a situation where it cannot even hold an election because it lacks 'K-paper'."
Representative Na Kyung-won, who proposed an amendment to the Public Official Election Act to allow for re-elections, said, "My task is to prioritize amending the election law once the National Assembly is formed. Even if it takes time, a re-election is possible," adding, "I believe a re-election is the way to truly restore suffrage and ensure the completeness and integrity of voting."
Representative Park Dae-chul, chairman of the party's Special Committee on NEC Reform, claimed, "Countless citizens, including youth and university students, are crying out for the return of their lost and stolen suffrage," and asserted, "Abolishing the early voting system is becoming the prevailing trend."
The debate was attended by Representative Jang, Supreme Council member Woo, Secretary-General Jeong Hee-yong, Representatives Yoon Sang-hyun, Cho Bae-sook, Park Dae-chul, Na Kyung-won, Lee In-seon, Kim Min-jeon, Kim Jang-kyum, Park Jun-tae, Seo Cheon-ho, and Choi Bo-yoon, along with approximately 50 youth, university students, and experts.
