President Lee Jae-myung reiterated yesterday (June 29) that the plan to establish a semiconductor cluster in the Honam region is a path that must be taken for the sake of the entire nation. Regarding the so-called "Honam favoritism" controversy, he emphasized that while this specific investment may seem large, it is merely a "drop in the bucket" when considering the historical disparity in cumulative investment.

President Lee Jae-myung expressed his gratitude once again today at a Cabinet meeting to Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix for their decision to make large-scale investments in local regions, including Honam.
He added that this large-scale investment is an opportunity to overcome the capital-centric system and correct the development imbalance between the Yeongnam and Honam regions.
[President Lee Jae-myung: It is a clear fact that there has been discrimination between the Yeongnam and Honam regions. This new environment has finally created a situation where that imbalance can be eased, even if only slightly.]
He refuted claims of "regional discrimination" raised primarily by the conservative opposition party regarding the 896 trillion won semiconductor-related investment announced for the Honam region.
[President Lee Jae-myung: It is true that the investment in the Honam region is somewhat large if you look at this matter in isolation. However, if you compare the historically accumulated investment amounts, it is truly nothing more than a drop in the bucket.]
President Lee also applauded Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, who is resigning to run for the next party leader of the Democratic Party, stating that he played a significant role in the government's various achievements over the past year, such as the reduction in the number of suicides.
[President Lee Jae-myung: You have truly been a great help to state affairs and have managed the overall direction very well. Shall we give a round of applause to our hard-working Prime Minister?]
Additionally, at today's Cabinet meeting, it was discussed that as the crude oil supply situation has improved, the odd-even vehicle rotation system for public vehicles, which had been in effect since the Middle East war, will be lifted. However, it was decided that the price ceiling on petroleum will be maintained for the time being, taking into account factors such as inflation.
