A man in his 40s has been apprehended by police for attempting to commit arson inside a subway train using a lighter and an insecticide spray.
The Seoul Jungbu Police Station announced today (June 30) that they arrested the suspect, identified as A, at the scene the previous night at 9:12 p.m. on charges of attempted arson of an occupied train.
A is accused of attempting to spray insecticide while holding a lit lighter toward the emergency door release device inside a train heading from Myeongdong Station to Chungmuro Station on Seoul Subway Line 4.
It is reported that the fire did not actually ignite because other passengers intervened to stop him.
Police arrested the man at the scene at 9:25 p.m., approximately 10 minutes after receiving the report.
The police plan to investigate the motive and circumstances behind the crime and apply for an arrest warrant for A.
