The film 'Pupil,' starring actress Shin Min-a, is closing in on 'Toy Story 5' with a gap of only about 2,000 viewers, setting the stage for a potential box office upset.
According to the Korean Film Council's integrated computer network for movie theater tickets on June 30, 'Pupil' maintained its second-place position at the box office by drawing 38,498 viewers nationwide on June 29. The cumulative number of viewers stands at 343,722. The daily attendance recorded that day was just 2,201 fewer than the current box office leader, 'Toy Story 5' (40,699 viewers).
'Pupil,' which was released on June 24, finished its opening weekend in second place. While the gap between it and 'Toy Story 5' was nearly threefold during the first weekend, it has narrowed to the 2,000-viewer range as the film entered the weekdays of its second week.
This success is attributed to positive word-of-mouth from audiences. A remake of the Spanish film 'Julia's Eyes,' 'Pupil' has been praised for creating an engaging horror experience through adaptations tailored to Korean sensibilities and compelling plot twists. The film is receiving a warm response, maintaining an 8.9 rating on Naver and an 89% Egg Index on CGV.
With a net production cost of 6.6 billion won, the break-even point for 'Pupil' is approximately 1.8 million viewers. While there is still a long way to go, the film has shown an unexpected surge by chasing 'Toy Story 5,' which has secured a solid fan base, right to its heels, raising expectations for its future box office performance.
'Pupil' is a suspense thriller about Seo-jin, who is gradually losing her eyesight due to a genetic disease, as she uncovers the truth behind her twin sister's death. The film stars Shin Min-a and Kim Nam-hee and is directed by Yeom Ji-ho, who previously gained attention for 'Next Door Neighbors.'
