The government has decided to cancel a planned public forum intended to discuss whether to provide health insurance coverage for hair loss treatment.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare stated, "Considering the diverse opinions presented ahead of the forum and the fact that various positions regarding the expansion of insurance benefits for hair loss have been sufficiently raised, we have determined that it is necessary to take more time for review."
However, the ministry added, "Even though the forum has been canceled, we plan to continue developing policies to address the health issues of citizens, including young people, and to strengthen the coverage of the national health insurance system."
Previously, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety had planned to hold the first in-person public forum on July 4, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Welfare, under the theme of "Health Insurance Coverage for Hair Loss Medication," as part of an initiative to allow citizens to participate directly in the policy-making process.
The inclusion of hair loss medication under health insurance is a matter that President Lee Jae-myung ordered to be reviewed during a briefing by the Ministry of Health and Welfare late last year.
Minister of Health and Welfare Jung Eun-kyeong mentioned the expansion of health insurance coverage for hair loss treatment as a key task for the second half of the year during a press conference marking the first anniversary of the current administration on June 11.
However, amid concerns from many patients with severe or rare diseases who are struggling with the burden of medical and pharmaceutical costs, there has been persistent public criticism regarding the use of national health insurance funds—which face significant risks of deficit—for hair loss treatment.
With the Ministry of Health and Welfare canceling the forum amidst criticism from the medical community, patient advocacy groups, and various other sectors, interpretations are emerging that the policy initiative has effectively hit a roadblock.
