President Lee Jae-myung said today (the 29th), "We must make this year the start of the dream of an irreplaceable Republic of Korea, and the core task for this is a great leap forward into a super-gap industrial powerhouse," adding, "Semiconductors, physical AI, and AI data centers are the triangular axis for this great leap."
President Lee made the remarks while presiding over the 'National Report on the 3 Mega-Projects for Korea's Great Leap Forward' at the Blue House today. He stated, "The Republic of Korea is now standing at a turning point for a new great leap forward."
Regarding the promotion of the semiconductor industry, one of the three major projects, he emphasized, "We must quickly complete the production bases currently underway to meet the explosively increasing demand for semiconductors," and added, "We must secure overwhelming supply capacity in advance through large-scale new investments in the southwestern region."
He continued, "The existing facilities centered around Yongin and Pyeongtaek are already reaching their limits," and ordered, "We must significantly accelerate the speed (of the facilities in the southwestern region)."
He also explained, "It is time to build a virtuous cycle where data collected in the field through physical AI is gathered back into data centers to lead industrial innovation," and added, "To this end, building data centers across the country is an important task."
He further emphasized, "Only when this triangular axis operates organically like gears will the Republic of Korea leap forward into a global super-gap industrial powerhouse that leads the artificial intelligence revolution."
In particular, President Lee highlighted that the investment in the southwestern region was made because the interests of the government and companies aligned, stating, "This announcement has special significance in that the demand for balanced development and new artificial intelligence and semiconductor hubs coincide."
President Lee emphasized, "It is not about forcing national needs while imposing losses and risks on companies, as some have worried, but about pooling the government's capabilities so that companies can invest without incurring losses."
President Lee said, "Among the things I have accomplished so far, today's achievement is the greatest national and historical accomplishment," and told Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong and SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, who attended the event, "I cannot help but express my gratitude to both chairmen."
Furthermore, he promised, "We must concentrate the capabilities of the government and the private sector to build a Korean-style AI ecosystem. The achievements of the 3 mega-projects will be responsible for the next 20 to 30 years of the Republic of Korea," adding, "I will place an officer in charge of this project directly within the Blue House, and I will personally oversee the 3 mega-projects to ensure their swift implementation."
