Following the South Korean national soccer team's elimination from the North and Central America World Cup group stage, some netizens have drawn criticism for flooding the social media accounts of Congolese-born television personality Jonathan with malicious comments.
On June 28, the Democratic Republic of the Congo defeated Uzbekistan 3 to 1, which resulted in the South Korean national team failing to advance to the Round of 32.
In response, some netizens directed their anger at Jonathan simply because he is from the Congo.
Jonathan's social media accounts were filled with malicious comments demanding that he apologize to the Korean people or asking if he was rooting for the Congo. Other netizens have spoken out against these irrational comments, questioning why he is being used as a target for misplaced anger and offering apologies on behalf of those who left the hateful messages.
The entertainment industry also expressed its disappointment over the team's elimination from the Round of 32.
Kim Hee-chul of Super Junior expressed his regret, saying, "I heard this might be Son Heung-min's last World Cup," while Yoon Doo-joon, a well-known soccer fan in the entertainment industry, also expressed his sadness, stating that "the thread of hope has been cut."
