6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Northeastern Afghanistan; 6.1 Magnitude Quake Also Occurs Off Coast of Japan

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck 43 kilometers south of Jurm in Badakhshan Province, northeastern Afghanistan, yesterday (June 27) afternoon, local time.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 199 kilometers.

Strong tremors were felt in areas including the Afghan capital of Kabul, as well as parts of northern Pakistan adjacent to the region where the earthquake occurred.

Around 5:20 a.m. today, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake also occurred in the waters 120 kilometers east-northeast of Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, Japan.

The depth of this earthquake was 40 kilometers.

The Korea Meteorological Administration stated, "This data is based on the analysis results from the Japan Meteorological Agency, and there is no impact on South Korea."
