▲ Earthquake in Venezuela
A preliminary assessment by the United Nations indicates that the direct damage caused by the series of powerful earthquakes that recently struck Venezuela amounts to 6% of the country's GDP.
In a statement released on June 26 (local time), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) announced that the physical losses from the earthquake that occurred on June 24 are estimated at 6.7 billion dollars, or approximately 10.3 trillion Korean won.
This figure was calculated based on earthquake modeling, satellite imagery, and population data, focusing primarily on losses to housing and assets.
The UNDP warned that this estimate does not include damage to public infrastructure such as roads and bridges, widespread economic disruption, or long-term reconstruction costs. It cautioned that the total economic impact, including these factors, could be 1.5 to 3 times the amount of the direct damage.
The Venezuelan government announced on June 27 that the death toll from the earthquake has reached 1,430, with 3,238 people injured.
